Until the opening of the William Street platforms at Perth station, it was the only underground railway station in the Transperth network. The rail line and station were sunk in 1997–1998 as part of the Subi Centro project. The original signal cabin is now sited at Whiteman Park in Caversham. Up until the 1980s there was a freight receiving depot at this station, and a third platform. The station is located close to Subiaco's most well-known landmarks including the Regal Theatre, Subiaco Hotel, Station Street Markets, Subiaco Oval and Rokeby Road.
